Hiking in and around Manson, WA HIKING Unforgettable hiking trails in the Lake Chelan Valley! Echo Ridge Summer Hiking Trails The Echo Ridge Trail System contains over 26 miles of trails. Hiking and mountain biking are popular activities spring through fall on Echo Ridge trails. There are wide, easy trails suitable for all ages with highly technical single track trails for the more adventurous. Expect to see great views of Lake Chelan, the Cascades, Okanogan Highlands and Columbia Plateau. Trail difficulty varies from “easy” trails to “most difficult,” but most trails are suitable for children. These trails are maintained annually. ECHO RIDGE SUMMER TRAILS INFO ECHO RIDGE SUMMER TRAILS MAP Lake Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness Approximately 194 miles of trails traverse the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness . Trails tend to be steady climbs into high basins and glacial cirques with lakes. The south facing portion of the range has more open, rolling high country that falls off very steeply into the Lake Chelan valley. Many parts of the Wilderness can be visited on a day trip. A BIT OF HISTORY Manson Backus, the father of Leroy M. Backus president of the Lake Chelan Land Company. Where did Manson get its name? In 1911, A. Bergman supervised the grading of 100 acres for the new town site of Manson. Manson was named for Manson Backus, the father of Leroy M. Backus, president of the Lake Chelan Land Company. At the time the company owned 6500 acres and had planned to irrigate and subdivide the land into parcels suitable for agricultural operations. Peter Wapato and Ben Martin had each planted apple orchards before 1890. School was closed for two weeks in the fall so that the older children could help with the harvest. The Coleman and Despain Mill at Bear Wallow near Antilon Lake was a major supplier of lumber for the irrigation work around Manson. Displays of Lake Chelan fruit and vegetables at expositions around the United States inspired many families to move to the Lake Chelan Valley. The Manson Fruit Growers packing shed was in place by 1925. It was locally known as the “Unit” packing shed. The Manson business district was expanding by 1925 with 2 stores, a post office, a garage, school and public library. By 1925 a hardware store, barber shop, beauty shop and drugstore had been added to downtown. 1n 1931 the Chelan Box and Manufacturing Company and sawmill on Mill Bay was a major employer with 2 shifts of 80 workers each. The manufacturing company operated until 1967. The sawmill closed in 1969 when a fire destroyed the mill. Welcome to Manson’s GeoQuest, a geocaching treasure hunt that will show you more of what our town has to offer! Follow the Manson Scenic Loop on the North Shore of Lake Chelan and visit places you might otherwise not know about. Great photo opportunities await you on this Quest! THE CACHES There are eight caches for you to find. To get started, download the GeoQuest Passport. Also, here’s a handy bookmark list of the eight caches. If you have never geocached before, you will need to set up a free account on geocaching.com where the cache pages with coordinates and clues are located. To locate the caches you will need a GPS device: a dedicated GPS unit or a geocaching app on a GPS-enabled smartphone. Once you navigate to a cache location, look for the hidden container. The cache pages may offer hints to help you. When you locate the container, sign the physical logbook and trade trinkets if you like. Then share your experience by posting a log to the cache’s web page. WIN A PRIZE! If you find all eight caches and complete your passport, you can win a trackable Cachekinz tag. Allow 2-3 weeks for prize delivery. GUIDELINES Find each geocache and use its ink stamp to mark the appropriate circle on the passport. Many caches are on private property with permission, so please respect residents, guests, and surroundings. In addition to logging your finds, share your adventures online using #MansonGeoQuest. Mail your completed passport to the address below to receive the trackable Cachekinz prize. One Cachekinz per family or household.
